First loving Jesus so we can love our neighbors
Who We Are.
When Jesus was in the throes of a debate with the Jewish teachers of the law (Pharisees and Sadducees), one approached him with a challenging question.
“‘Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?’
Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 24:34-37
We are all sinners, incapable of meeting God’s heavenly moral standard. On our own, we can’t adequately love God or our neighbor. On our own, we cannot acquire the worthiness to spend eternity with God in heaven. Fortunately, God is filled with unending grace and love. In Jesus Christ, all things are made new!
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” John 3:16-17
Jesus Christ, God in flesh, lived a sinless life among us and then voluntarily took the penalty for all of humanity’s wrongdoings by dying on the cross. Three days later, He rose from the dead, paving the way for us to be reconciled with God and to have eternal life!
To receive this grace from God, we must each admit our sinful nature (repent), and have faith in the cleansing power of His blood.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” Ephesians 2:8
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17.
Once you’re new, you begin to truly love God through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and the good and wholesome things you do for your neighbor are truly sincere because your salvation does not depend on your own works.
